The CAT Scale App. Everything You Need to Know

Introduction

The CAT Scale app allows truck drivers to easily find certified scales and weigh their tractor-trailers on the go. Developed by CAT Scale Company, who has provided truck scales across North America for over 30 years, the app aims to save drivers time and money by providing easy access to certified weights.

The main features of the CAT Scale app include finding CAT certified scales nearby, weighing a tractor-trailer on a scale, viewing detailed weight reports, saving weight reports for future reference, and sharing results. The app provides trustworthy, legal-for-trade weights that are accepted at weigh stations and ports across North America.

Downloading the App

The CAT Scale Weigh My Truck app can be downloaded for free on both iOS and Android devices. For iOS devices like iPhones and iPads, you can download the app from the Apple App Store. For Android phones and tablets, you can find the app in the Google Play Store.

The app is compatible with most modern iOS and Android smartphones and tablets. As long as your device is running a somewhat recent version of iOS or Android and has an internet connection, you should be able to download and run the Weigh My Truck app without any issues.

Finding Scales

The CAT Scale app makes it easy to find truck scales nearby using either your current location or by searching for a specific address or location. The app’s map view shows your current location and pins all nearby CAT Scale locations (1). You can zoom and pan the map to explore different areas. Tapping on a pin reveals the scale’s name, address, and distance from your location. This map view lets you quickly see the closest scales on your route (2).

You can also search for scales by entering a city, address or ZIP code in the search bar at the top of the screen. This will center the map on that location and show the nearby scales. The powerful search even finds scales along your route if you search for a destination address (3). Whether using your current GPS location or searching manually, the map view provides an intuitive way to find CAT Scales near your truck’s location or along your planned route.

Weighing a Vehicle

Weighing your vehicle using the CAT Scale app is simple and efficient. To get started:

1. Drive onto the scale. Center your vehicle evenly across the platform, following the directions of the scale attendant. Once positioned correctly, put your vehicle in park and engage the parking brake.

2. Open the Weigh My Truck app on your smartphone. Tap “Weigh” at the bottom of the screen. The app will automatically detect the scale you are on. Enter your vehicle information, including the number of axles and weight per axle. Tap “Complete Weighing” when finished.

3. The app will process and display your vehicle weight results. This includes the gross vehicle weight (GVW), along with the weight per axle group. Your weight ticket will be saved in the app and you can share the results via email, text, or social media.

The Weigh My Truck app allows quick and efficient weighing using CAT Scales. Drivers simply drive onto the scale, input vehicle data, and get precise weight readings right on their smartphone. This improves compliance and optimizes load planning.

Understanding Results

The most important part of weighing your vehicle on a CAT scale is being able to read and interpret the weight results printed on your scale ticket. The ticket provides detailed information about your vehicle’s total weight as well as the weight distribution across each axle.

The total gross vehicle weight is printed at the top of the scale ticket. This is the combined weight of your vehicle plus any cargo, passengers, or trailer you may be towing. Underneath the total weight, the ticket breaks the weight down by each axle on your vehicle from front to back.

It’s important to pay attention to the weight on each individual axle, not just the total weight. Each axle has a maximum legal weight limit that must not be exceeded. According to the Federal Bridge Gross Weight Formula, the maximum allowable weight is 20,000 lbs on a single axle and 34,000 lbs on a tandem axle setup 1. Review the axle weights on your scale ticket to ensure none exceed the legal limits.

The scale ticket also shows if your weight is distributed properly between the axles. You want about 12% of your total weight on your steering axle, and the remaining weight distributed evenly between the drives and trailers. An improper weight distribution can cause handling issues, accelerate wear, or result in citations.

If your CAT scale results indicate any issues with your overall vehicle weight or axle weight distribution, you may need to adjust your load to bring it into compliance before proceeding.

Saving Weights

One of the most useful features of the Weigh My Truck app is the ability to save your weighments to your account history (Weigh My Truck – CAT Scale). This allows you to keep a record of all the weighments you conduct using the app.

After getting a weighment result in the app, you will see an option to “Save Weight.” Tap this to save that particular weighment to your account history. The app will ask you to confirm that you want to save the weight.

Once a weighment is saved, you can view your full history of saved weights by tapping on “History” at the bottom of the app screen. This brings up your account history showing all past weighments you’ve saved.

Having a history of weighment results can be useful for tracking and comparing weights over time. For example, you can use it to monitor changes in weight due to loading/unloading or other factors. The history also provides helpful documentation of your past weighments.

Sharing Results

One of the great features of the CAT Scale app is the ability to easily share your weighment results with others via text, email, or social media. After you complete a weighment, simply tap the “Share” button from the results screen. This will bring up a menu with options to share via text message, email, Facebook, Twitter, and more. You can type in multiple recipients to share the weighment info and weights with. The app will automatically format the text to include your truck ID, weight of each axle group, gross weight, location, date, and other details. This makes it quick and simple to send the certified weighment receipt to dispatchers, brokers, co-drivers, or anyone else who needs the info. No more fussing with paperwork or photos – just tap to share the weighment digitally in seconds from your phone.

You can also go back later and share past weighments. Tap “View History” and select any past weighment. Then tap the options menu and choose “Share” to send the details. This comes in handy if you need to look up and resend info from an older weighment. Overall, the seamless sharing options help you quickly distribute certified weights and keep everyone informed about your load status.

Troubleshooting

Sometimes issues can arise when using the CAT Scale app. Here are some common problems and solutions:

App Won’t Open

If the app crashes or won’t open, first try force quitting the app and restarting your device. If that doesn’t work, check for any available updates to the app and install them. As a last resort, you may need to uninstall and reinstall the app (1).

Can’t Find Nearby Scales

Make sure location services are enabled for the app in your device settings. If it still can’t find nearby scales, there may be an issue with the app’s database of locations. Try force quitting and restarting the app. You can also manually search for scales using the in-app search bar.

Weighing Errors

If you get abnormal or incorrect weigh results, first verify the app is showing the correct truck/trailer configuration. Double check your weight ticket matches the app results. If errors persist, contact CAT Scale support through the app or website (2).

Login Errors

If you have trouble logging in, double check your username and password are correct. Reset your password if needed. Make sure you have an internet connection. If you still can’t login, uninstall and reinstall the app to clear any corrupted data.
